Oakland County Mourns Tragic Death of 25-Year-Old Grace Nolan in Walled Lake Car Crash
WALLED LAKE, MICHIGAN — The Oakland County and Walled Lake communities are mourning the tragic and unexpected death of Grace Nolan, a beloved daughter, sister, girlfriend and former Oakland University runner who was killed in a devastating car accident over the weekend.
Nolan, 25, died following a single-vehicle crash reported Sunday, October 18, at the intersection of Decker Road and South Commerce Road in Walled Lake. Her death has left family members, friends, former teammates and members of Michigan’s running community heartbroken.
According to a report from the Walled Lake Fire Department, emergency crews responded to the scene at approximately 5:29 p.m. after receiving reports of a personal injury accident involving a vehicle that had struck a tree.
Upon arrival, firefighters found two critically injured occupants trapped inside the wreckage. Both patients were extricated before being transported to Henry Ford Hospital in Novi for emergency treatment.
One of the patients, identified as an adult woman, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The second occupant, identified in information provided by the family as Nolan’s boyfriend, Matt, sustained significant injuries and was reported to be hospitalized in critical condition.
Commerce Township Fire Department assisted with the emergency response, and authorities temporarily closed Decker Road south of Pontiac Trail while crews worked at the scene.
Father Announces Heartbreaking Loss
Nolan’s father shared the devastating news in an emotional statement issued on behalf of himself and Grace’s mother, Wendy, describing their daughter as an extraordinary person whose life touched many people.
“Wendy and I are regrettably sharing some very sad news. Our daughter, Grace Nolan, was killed in a car crash this past weekend,” he wrote.
Reflecting on the young woman’s character and the many roles she played in the lives of others, he added: “If you knew Grace, I don’t need to tell you what an amazing human she was, truly extraordinary.”
He described Grace as a daughter, sister, girlfriend, friend, mentor, scholar, athlete and comedian, among the many qualities that made her special to those around her.
The family is now confronting the unimaginable pain of losing their daughter while also worrying about Matt’s recovery and supporting his loved ones through the tragedy.
Although devastated by the loss, Grace’s father expressed gratitude to the many people who had already contacted the family with messages of sympathy, phone calls, emails and private messages.
He also asked friends and supporters to keep Matt and his family in their thoughts, acknowledging that they, too, were enduring an incredibly difficult time.
“We are planning a celebration of Grace’s remarkable 25 years of life on Saturday October 31st at Oakland University,” he said, adding that further details would be shared in the coming days.
“We love you all,” he concluded.
